HENRI's Product Guide: How to use a salt water spray and not ruin your hair

HENRIs produktguide: Sådan bruger du en saltvandsspray uden at ødelægge håret

Salt water spray is one of the most widely used styling products for men – and one of the most misunderstood. The short question people ask: does it dry out your hair? The short answer: it depends on the product and the technique. This guide gives you both.

What does a salt water spray do?

A salt water spray replicates the effect of a day at the beach. Salt opens the hair's surface slightly, creating texture, a matte finish and natural separation. The result is hair that looks like it has lived a little – without looking styled.

It is important to distinguish between sea water and a professionally formulated spray. Sea water dries out the hair. A well-formulated spray is designed to counteract exactly that effect – with nourishing ingredients that balance the action of the salt.

Does salt water spray dry out your hair?

Salt is hygroscopic – it draws moisture out of the hair shaft. Used too frequently or in too large quantities, it can make the hair brittle and difficult to manage over time.

However, the best products on the market are formulated to actively counteract this. Ingredients such as Spirulina and Chondrus Crispus (Irish moss) are naturally moisture-binding and preserve the hair's elasticity. A product with the right ingredients delivers texture without compromising hair health.

A good rule of thumb: always use a softening conditioner on days when you use salt water spray. This keeps the hair in balance over the long term.

How to use a salt water spray correctly

In towel-dried hair

This is the recommended method and produces the most natural result.

  1. Wash your hair and gently towel dry it. The hair should be damp – not soaking wet.
  2. Shake the spray before use.
  3. Spray from mid-lengths to ends in even strokes. Hold the bottle 20–25 cm from the hair.
  4. Want root volume? Lift sections and spray directly at the roots.
  5. Gently scrunch the hair upward toward the scalp for 10–15 seconds. This activates the product and defines the waves.
  6. Air dry for the most natural look – or use a diffuser on low heat for more definition.

In completely dry hair

Spray lightly over the entire hair and let it set for 30 seconds. Then work through it with your fingers. An effective method for reviving a style mid-day.

Always start with a small amount and build up until it feels right. For most people this will be around 3–5 sprays. If you have thicker hair, you may need to add more. Just remember the golden rule: it is always easier to add salt water spray than to have to remove it.

As a pre-styler under clay or pomade

A technique used daily in HENRI's salon environment: spray salt water spray into towel-dried hair and rough-dry it 80–90% dry. Finish with a small amount of clay or pomade. The result is significantly more texture and natural separation – with less product than usual.

Salt water spray for your hair type

Fine or flat hair

Spray at the roots and rough-dry with your fingers for lift. Avoid applying too much to the ends – it weighs fine hair down.

Straight hair

Apply to towel-dried hair, divide into sections and twist them lightly before air drying. The less you touch it along the way, the more defined the waves.

Wavy or curly hair

Spray through the lengths and scrunch. Combine with a diffuser to preserve the shape and reduce frizz.

Thick or coarse hair

Spray evenly and use your fingers to create separation. Can be combined with a light clay for extra hold.

HENRI Refined Salt Water

Most salt water sprays solve one problem and create another. Our Refined Salt Water is formulated with the opposite starting point – texture and care rather than texture at the expense of care.

The product contains Spirulina and Chondrus Crispus Extract, which actively counteract the drying effect of salt and preserve the hair's elasticity. Here you get the classic beach look without a sticky finish. Refined Salt Water works both as a standalone product and as a pre-styler. The scent is mineral with notes of lemon peel and wild herbs.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use salt water spray on colour-treated hair?

Yes, but colour-treated hair is typically more porous and reacts more quickly to salt. Limit use to twice a week and always use a moisturising conditioner.

Will the hair go stiff?

Not if the product is well-formulated and you apply the correct amount. Start light and build up.

Can salt water spray replace dry shampoo?

No – the functions are different. Dry shampoo absorbs oil. Salt water spray adds texture. They complement each other.

Do I need to wash my hair after use?

Not necessarily. The product is lightweight and does not accumulate in the hair the way heavier styling products do.
